RENO, NEVADA / RankWire.AI / – The Hawk Fire burning near Reno has resulted in the destruction of 47 residences along with a commercial building, with firefighters raising containment to 85% late Tuesday. The wildfire burned through 15,067 acres after racing across arid terrain northwest of the city since Saturday. An additional eight homes suffered serious damage in the latest assessment. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, though seven individuals were injured during firefighting efforts. The overall damage tally increased considerably from earlier evaluations. Meanwhile, firefighting crews maintained the fire’s footprint as containment efforts expanded.

Washoe County assessment teams completed an initial review of neighborhoods affected by the fire on Tuesday. The majority of the losses clustered west of U.S. Highway 395, with fewer damaged structures on the eastern side. Authorities reported that canine search teams examined the affected zones and found no signs of victims. Fire officials noted the blaze traveled approximately six miles during its first 24 hours. The rapid spread prompted large-scale evacuations across communities located north and northwest of Reno. Damage assessment teams continued documenting losses as residents received updates about affected properties.

On Tuesday afternoon, authorities permitted roughly 9,300 residents east of U.S. 395 to return to their homes as conditions improved. About 5,000 individuals remained under evacuation orders at that time. Some neighborhoods transitioned from mandatory evacuation to lower alert levels as crews secured containment lines. Road access also improved following closures that disrupted travel through northern Reno. Returning residents faced utility damages, debris, and lingering hot spots near affected properties. Officials continued to direct residents to current evacuation information before entering restricted zones.

    Containment progress reduces evacuation zones

Firefighting teams held the Hawk Fire at 15,067 acres while advancing containment along its perimeter. The number of personnel assigned to the effort decreased to 586 late Tuesday as containment increased. Crews focused on checking hot spots, strengthening fire lines, and working around damaged neighborhoods. The response initially involved hundreds of firefighters, engines, helicopters, and other resources from across the U.S. The firefighting effort also included personnel from Australia and New Zealand. The main focus was on securing existing containment lines and reducing residual heat within the burned area.

The fire has been classified as human-caused, with investigators continuing to examine its origins. Authorities have yet to disclose whether the ignition was accidental or deliberate. The fire ignited Saturday near the Somersett area, spreading rapidly through dry vegetation. Strong winds during the first day drove flames toward populated sections of northwest Reno. As conditions improved, firefighting crews gained greater control and worked to reinforce containment around the perimeter. No additional details have been released regarding the source of the fire’s ignition.

State agencies bolster firefighting efforts following emergency declaration

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County over the weekend. The declaration authorized state agencies to assist local firefighting and safety operations through Nevada’s emergency management framework. It also facilitated coordination of firefighting, public safety, and recovery activities in communities impacted by the Hawk Fire. State resources supported local teams as evacuation zones expanded and thousands of residents evacuated. The emergency declaration remains in effect through August 29 unless terminated earlier by officials. Emergency operations continue to support local agencies managing evacuations, disseminating public information, and providing community assistance.

During the fire’s progression through Reno, approximately 100 wooden utility poles were damaged, impacting power infrastructure. Utility crews worked diligently to restore service as neighborhoods were reopened for residents returning home. Firefighters conducted patrols, damage inspections, and safety checks around the fire perimeter late Tuesday. Authorities continued updating evacuation zones as restrictions evolved across the affected region. The confirmed toll includes 47 homes destroyed, eight homes seriously damaged, and one commercial building lost. With containment at 85%, crews remain actively engaged in suppression efforts and safety work across the affected area.
