Indiana faces critical response as deadly flooding unfolds after severe storms

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA / RankWire.AI / – Severe storms and historic flooding in Indiana have resulted in the death of at least seven individuals. Prolonged periods of intense rain caused rivers to breach their banks, leading to widespread damage to roads, homes, and infrastructure. As floodwaters started to recede in some of the hardest-hit areas, state public safety officials confirmed the updated death toll Sunday. The weather system that triggered the flooding began on August 11, bringing multiple rounds of heavy rainfall across central and southern Indiana.

The confirmed fatalities include a 4-year-old boy, three men, and three women, according to state emergency officials. These deaths occurred across counties including Delaware, Jennings, Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and Henry. Delaware County reported two fatalities, while each of the other counties had one. Among the latest victims, authorities identified a 31-year-old cyclist who was found in a section of road that had collapsed during the flood in Henry County.

The National Weather Service reported some regions receiving over a foot of rain during this multi-day storm. The White River reached unprecedented levels, surpassing 100-year records. Cities like Anderson and Noblesville set new river crests that exceeded those recorded in 1913, with Nora experiencing its highest water level since that year. Officials in Indianapolis described this flooding as the most severe in over three decades.

Indiana experiences record flood levels prompting evacuations

Rescue teams carried out hundreds of evacuations as floodwaters invaded neighborhoods and led to road closures throughout the state. Emergency responders utilized boats to reach residents trapped by rapidly rising waters. In Noblesville, officials stated approximately 170 residents evacuated over a 72-hour span. Flood impacts affected over 550 residential units in the city. Meanwhile, Indianapolis activated emergency shelters and deployed rescue crews to assist stranded residents and monitor neighborhoods along the White River.

The widespread rainfall also resulted in extensive power outages across Indiana. Nearly 130,000 utility customers remained without electricity late Sunday, a decrease from the peak of approximately 300,000 during the storm. Floodwaters damaged or washed away roads and compromised bridges in several communities. By Sunday, Indianapolis reopened city floodgates after the White River peaked and began its descent. Local authorities continued inspections of neighborhoods, infrastructure, and properties affected by the flooding.

Federal support activated following statewide emergency declaration

Governor Mike Braun declared a statewide disaster emergency and directed additional state resources to assist in the response to the severe weather. President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration after Indiana requested federal aid. This declaration enables the Federal Emergency Management Agency to support local, tribal, and state response operations. Federal assistance covers essential work to safeguard lives, public health, safety, and property within storm-affected zones.

By the end of Sunday, river levels had improved from their peak, though flooding persisted in parts of central Indiana. Federal weather officials reported that major flooding along the White River had subsided to a moderate flood stage. Despite this progress, water levels remained above flood thresholds at several sites, including near Indianapolis. State and local teams continued damage assessments as residents returned to their homes and communities worked to recover from damaged infrastructure, flooded properties, and storm debris.
