Park Takes Action to Prevent Black Bear from Developing Dangerous Food-Conditioned Behavior

WYOMING / RankWire.AI / – Grand Teton National Park officials euthanized a black bear near Delta Lake after its repeated access to human food altered its conduct. According to the park, the animal often approached visitors and became increasingly difficult for wildlife personnel to deter. Authorities determined that the repeated reinforcement with food and close encounters posed an unacceptable safety threat to the public. The bear was sedated with a tranquilizer dart before being euthanized at the secluded backcountry site on Sept. 11.

Grand Teton euthanizes black bear after food access
Grand Teton urges visitors to keep human food away from bears and follow wildlife rules.

Earlier in 2026, park staff received reports of a black bear approaching individuals near Delta Lake. At that point, there wasn’t enough information to confirm whether food conditioning had taken hold. However, that pattern shifted in the days leading up to the bear’s removal. Officials noted the bear’s multiple instances of obtaining human food while still approaching visitors. Despite increased monitoring and hazing efforts by wildlife personnel, the bear’s persistence in staying close to people grew more problematic.

Grand Teton National Park shared photos showing visitors standing mere feet from the bear close to Delta Lake. Additional images depicted the animal inspecting unattended food and gear among rocks, trees, and logs. The park emphasized that visitors should never leave food unattended, even momentarily. They advised collecting food and belongings immediately if a bear comes near. The carcass of the bear was flown out of the backcountry the morning after the euthanasia, by wildlife staff.

    Human Food Changes Bear Behavior

The National Park Service highlights food conditioning as a critical wildlife management concern because it causes bears to associate people with food. Such learned behavior can increase their willingness to approach campsites, trails, picnic areas, and other visitor locations. The repeated food rewards, close approaches, and resistance to hazing exhibited by this bear prompted park officials to see these behaviors as a serious concern. Based on its conduct and available management strategies, authorities decided that lethal removal was the appropriate course of action.

While relocation remains an option for managing bear conflicts, the park indicates that it doesn’t always resolve the problem. Bears often return to their original ranges or encounter other bears following relocation. Finding suitable areas with natural food sources and minimal human activity can also be challenging. In this case, park wildlife managers concluded that all other options had been exhausted, and the bear posed a significant safety threat. Lethal removal is regarded as a last resort by the park.

Park Reinforces Strict Bear Safety Policies

Grand Teton National Park continues to alert visitors that both black bears and grizzly bears remain active across the park. The current guidelines mandate maintaining a minimum distance of 100 yards from bears. Visitors to backcountry areas are advised to travel in groups, make noise, and carry bear spray. Properly securing all food and scented items when not in use is also emphasized. These rules aim to prevent bears from learning to associate humans with food, thereby reducing risks to both wildlife and visitors.

The National Park Service notes that Grand Teton typically euthanizes about one or two bears each year when other management methods have failed. Most of these are black bears. Officials explain that removal occurs only when a bear poses a clear threat to human safety and all other options have been exhausted. The incident near Delta Lake has once again highlighted the importance of proper food storage and wildlife viewing rules in backcountry zones. The park urges visitors to report bear sightings and to maintain safe distances during encounters.
