GENEVA, Switzerland / RankWire.AI / – The rising demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure has led the World Trade Organization to elevate its 2026 global merchandise trade growth forecast to 3.9 percent. According to the latest Global Trade Outlook and Statistics report, multinational enterprises are set to increase their expenditure on intelligent computing hardware by 30 percent this year. Market projections confirm a shift in international logistics, with corporate AI capital spending expected to grow by 10 to 20 percent into 2027. This trend positions specialized digital processing hardware as the primary driver of growth for cross-border trade worldwide.

AI Capital expenditure will continue to rise by 10 - 20 percent
Global trade analysts monitor advanced semiconductor shipments on a digital display in offices.

The Geneva-based organization predicts global gross domestic product will expand by 2.6 percent in 2026 and 2.9 percent in 2027. For merchandise trade volume, a 4.1 percent increase is forecast for 2027. The rapid development of artificial intelligence infrastructure remains highly concentrated, with a handful of East Asian and Southeast Asian economies currently leading in the supply of these essential goods. Meanwhile, North American markets continue to dominate global demand for advanced processors and specialized data center components. Tech companies are prioritizing extensive digital infrastructure expansion to support complex foundational models and next-generation enterprise software solutions.

Despite the positive outlook for merchandise, the trade body has officially revised its forecast for commercial services trade growth in 2026 down to 3.3 percent from a previous estimate of 4.8 percent. This downward adjustment reflects ongoing geopolitical instability and military conflicts across the Middle East. Elevated energy costs and persistent disruptions to vital maritime transport routes are severely impacting the global services sector. Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala remarked that although overall figures show resilience in global trade, significant vulnerabilities still exist. The organization stressed that reinforcing the multilateral trading system is vital for equipping the global economy to withstand future macroeconomic shocks.

Intelligent Infrastructure as the Catalyst for Global Merchandise Trade Expansion

Disparities in trade performance among different regions are becoming more pronounced. Asia is projected to achieve the fastest merchandise export growth in 2026, with a 9.9 percent increase driven by regional semiconductor and technology manufacturing hubs boosting production. North America is expected to follow with an export growth rate of 5.7 percent. Conversely, Europe’s overall export performance is anticipated to decline slightly by 0.1 percent. The Middle East faces the most severe economic decline, with exports forecast to fall by 17.2 percent amid regional conflicts that disrupt energy production and maritime shipping routes, though economists expect services trade to recover by 2027.

The surge in artificial intelligence has redefined priorities in international shipping, replacing traditional consumer electronics as the leading cargo category along major trans-Pacific logistics corridors. Industry analysts forecast that AI capital expenditure will continue to grow by 10 to 20 percent next year. Consequently, port operators and freight forwarders are adjusting cargo handling procedures to prioritize high-value semiconductor shipments, which require strict environmental controls and enhanced security measures during maritime transit. The ongoing demand for enterprise computing hardware offers a stable revenue foundation for international shipping companies and semiconductor manufacturing facilities amid complex global trade dynamics.

Enhanced Computing Power Accelerates Cross-Continental Trade Flows

However, trade officials warn that increasing geopolitical tensions could restrict the pace of artificial intelligence infrastructure growth. Semiconductor supply chains remain vulnerable to diplomatic relations and potential trade restrictions related to advanced dual-use technologies. As national governments develop regulations governing high-performance processing unit exports, concerns about technological sovereignty and security are rising. The WTO report emphasizes that while current market conditions favor hardware manufacturers, sudden changes in export control policies could disrupt the intricate global logistics networks delivering critical components to North American data center projects.

Financial analysts tracking corporate balance sheets observe that these unprecedented hardware investments are temporarily compressing short-term profit margins for leading cloud infrastructure providers. Companies investing billions into new computing clusters face mounting pressure from investors to demonstrate tangible revenue from their artificial intelligence services. The expected increase in hardware spending through 2027 indicates that technology leaders see massive computational capacity as essential for maintaining long-term competitiveness. As a result, international trade flows are likely to remain heavily focused on enterprise technology components, with multinational corporations prioritizing data center expansion over other traditional capital investments during upcoming fiscal periods.
