Monitoring efforts intensify as magnitude 5.0 quake strikes near Atka in Alaska

ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – On Saturday evening, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake occurred close to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, with its epicenter southeast of Atka. According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, the event was recorded at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, which corresponds to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The quake’s source was approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka, with a depth estimated at about 17 kilometers, or 10.6 miles.

Alaska earthquake reaches magnitude 5.0 near Atka
Seismic networks recorded the magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Atka, Alaska.

The precise coordinates of the event are 51.8286 degrees north and 173.2496 degrees west. Atka is situated on Atka Island within the Aleutian chain, far from the main population centers of Alaska. The earthquake’s location also lies southwest of Seguam Island and Amukta Pass, with Mount Sergief and several other islands nearby. This area is part of one of Alaska’s most seismically active zones, where earthquakes happen regularly across a wide spectrum of depths.

Compared to many deeper earthquakes beneath the Aleutians, the magnitude 5.0 event was relatively shallow. The seismic activity in this region reflects the ongoing collision of major tectonic plates beneath the North Pacific. The Pacific Plate moves underneath the North American Plate along the Aleutian Arc, generating frequent earthquakes from the western Aleutian Islands to mainland Alaska. Continuous monitoring by scientists is essential due to the persistent seismic activity in this area.

The Aleutian Arc as a hotspot for seismic activity

The Aleutian Arc spans a significant stretch of the North Pacific and marks a major boundary between tectonic plates. The process called subduction involves one plate descending beneath another, leading to earthquakes at various depths—shallow, intermediate, and deep. Alaska endures thousands of earthquakes annually, many occurring beneath or near the Aleutian Islands. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains a network of seismic stations that detect ground movements, helping experts determine the location, depth, and magnitude of each quake.

Historically, the region has experienced powerful earthquakes, including a magnitude 8.6 event in the Andreanof Islands in 1957, and a magnitude 8.7 in the Rat Islands in 1965. Additionally, the area saw significant quakes around the Andreanof Islands in 1986 and 1996. While these events varied in size and specific location, they are all part of the broader seismic activity linked to the active tectonic boundary beneath the Aleutian chain.

Seismic monitoring networks continue to track Alaska’s earthquake activity

Earthquakes originating in the Aleutians can occur in multiple parts of the tectonic system. Some happen near the primary plate boundary, while others develop within the descending Pacific Plate. Shallow earthquakes can also originate within the crust above the boundary. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains national seismic records and assesses earthquake data across Alaska and nationally. Regional networks provide detailed observations from stations distributed throughout the state’s remote and expansive territory.

The magnitude 5.0 quake recorded on Saturday adds another event to Alaska’s active seismic history, specifically in the Aleutian Islands. Its location southeast of Atka and its depth of 17 kilometers define its primary characteristics. Seismic stations captured the signals, enabling specialists to refine the event details. Given Alaska’s vast geography and active tectonic boundary, ongoing earthquake surveillance is crucial—especially for isolated island communities along the Aleutian chain.
