US and European Fuel Markets Confront Tightening Diesel Supplies to Secure Energy Stability

    August 12, 2026
Facebook WhatsApp Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Telegram Tumblr Email Reddit VKontakte

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Wednesday, diesel markets experienced sustained pressure due to dwindling inventories and refinery outages, resulting in tighter fuel availability across the US and Europe. U.S. ultra-low sulfur diesel futures surged 7.4% on Monday to reach $4.19 per gallon, marking the most significant daily gain since July 13. By early Wednesday, prices hovered near $4.28. Meanwhile, European diesel refining margins remained elevated after nearly a 10% increase at the start of the week.

Diesel supply tightens across US and European fuel markets
US diesel stocks remain low while European refining margins stay elevated.

Latest official data revealed a significant drop in U.S. distillate stockpiles. The U.S. Energy Information Administration indicated stocks of 107.2 million barrels for the week ending July 31, a decrease of 3.5 million barrels from the prior week. These inventories were 5.1% below the levels of the same period last year and 16.1% lower than the same week in 2024. This category, which encompasses diesel and heating oil, serves as a key indicator of domestic middle-distillate supply availability.

Despite a slight decline from the previous week, retail diesel prices remained elevated. The national average in the U.S. on August 10 was $5.257 per gallon, down from $5.348 one week earlier, yet still substantially above the $4.578 recorded on July 6. European markets faced similar supply pressures, with the low-sulfur gasoil premium over crude reaching a record $74.66 a barrel on July 30, reflecting a sharp rise in the value of finished diesel compared with crude oil.

Refinery outages are constraining global product flows

Reduced refinery activity caused by outages has diminished the supply of diesel and other fuels available for international trade. Notably, a refinery in Russia’s Tatarstan region was damaged in an attack, contributing to lower Russian processing capacity. The Jazan refinery in Saudi Arabia has been offline since July 27 following an earlier attack, further removing refined-product capacity from the global market. By June, refinery runs worldwide were already below last year’s levels, impacted by lower processing across key fuel-producing regions.

Export limitations have also played a role in restricting supply. Russia extended restrictions on gasoline and diesel exports through January 31, 2027. Shipping activity in the Middle East has decreased through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for petroleum trade. Additionally, China has exported fewer refined products as domestic refinery activity waned. The European Central Bank reported diesel pump prices near €1.98 per litre during the third week of July, with refining margins comprising a larger portion of retail costs.

Despite increased refinery output, US stocks remain depleted

Although U.S. refiners have processed record amounts of crude oil during the first seven months of 2026, distillate inventories continue to be unusually low. Crude input levels reached their highest point since 2019 for this period, yet refinery utilization has not been enough to restore diesel stockpiles to typical seasonal levels. At the start of August, inventories were at their lowest for this time of year in nearly thirty years. The persistent tightness stems from limited international product flows combined with ongoing refinery disruptions.

Meanwhile, oil prices gained ground on Wednesday, with Brent crude approaching $89.81 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate around $84.08. Diesel markets remain under pressure because supplies of finished fuel are constrained in several major regions. Diesel is crucial for sectors such as trucking, agriculture, construction, and manufacturing. Reduced U.S. inventories, elevated European refining margins, refinery outages, and export restrictions have contributed to ongoing tightness in diesel markets across both continents, as buyers compete for limited available supplies.
