Market Focuses on Federal Reserve Minutes as Gold Gains Amid Treasury Yield Declines

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Wednesday morning in Asia, U.S. Treasury yields retreated from recent peaks, helping gold prices edge upward. Spot gold increased by 0.2% to $4,342.33 an ounce at 0030 GMT after experiencing a nearly 2% drop on Tuesday. December U.S. gold futures decreased 0.6% to $4,396.30 an ounce. This rebound kept market attention centered on interest-rate expectations. The Federal Reserve is set to release minutes from its July policy meeting at 1800 GMT Wednesday.

Gold rises as Treasury yields ease before Fed minutes
Gold markets track Treasury yields and Federal Reserve rate expectations.

Gold had experienced a decline on Tuesday following two sessions of gains. By 1733 GMT, spot gold fell 1.1% to $4,364.90 per ounce. December futures declined 1.2% to $4,420.60. A global selloff in bonds caused long-term borrowing costs in several key economies to approach levels not seen in decades. The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield hit 5.3371% on Tuesday, its highest in nearly 20 years, before easing to roughly 5.28% during Asian trading on Wednesday.

Expectations for a September rate hike remain subdued in interest-rate markets. According to CME FedWatch data, there is a 65% chance that policymakers will leave rates unchanged next month, while traders assign a 35% probability to a quarter-point increase. Lower anticipated rates tend to support gold, as bullion does not generate interest. Recent U.S. data also showed unexpected job losses, subdued inflation, and weaker retail spending in July, reducing market expectations for an immediate rate hike.

Focus on Fed Minutes Highlights Policy Divisions

Federal Reserve maintained its federal funds target range at 3.50% to 3.75% on July 29, with the Federal Open Market Committee approving the decision by a 9-3 vote. Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari, and Lorie Logan favored a quarter-point increase. Despite uncertainty, the committee noted that economic activity was expanding at a solid pace and inflation remained above the 2% target, partly due to supply shocks raising energy prices. Employment growth kept pace with the workforce, with little change in unemployment levels.

These divisions drew additional attention to the record of the July meeting. Led by Chairman Kevin Warsh in his second policy session as Fed chair, the meeting’s statement indicated that the central bank would continue maintaining ample reserves within the banking system. The upcoming policy meeting is scheduled from September 15 to September 16, during which officials will reassess economic and financial conditions before setting the new target range, aligned with the central bank’s monetary policy framework.

Bond Market Movements Continue to Drive Gold Trading Dynamics

Treasury yields remained a dominant factor influencing precious metals after Tuesday’s sharp movements. Rising yields increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, which does not generate interest income. Oil prices stayed elevated, adding to inflationary pressures in the markets. Meanwhile, early Wednesday trading saw mixed results for other precious metals: spot silver declined 0.5% to $62.99 an ounce, platinum gained 0.3% to $1,717.03, and palladium fell 0.3% to $1,286.73, reflecting the varied performance across the precious-metals complex.

Following a turbulent August, gold prices concluded the month with little change compared to July. According to the World Gold Council, global gold exchange-traded funds saw net inflows of $3 billion during July, increasing total holdings by 23 metric tons to 4,068 tons. Assets under management also grew by 1% to $530 billion. The early Wednesday rebound recovered only a small portion of Tuesday’s decline, with rate expectations, Treasury yields, and U.S. monetary policy remaining key factors shaping the gold market’s outlook.
